Notes

[NI022] There was a baptism tax of 3d imposed from 1783 to 1794. During this period many infants were not baptised, or were baptised after the tax was withdrawn...

Saint-Thomas Vernon married Jane Jupp in Reigate, 1803, both previously unmarried and of that Parish. Thomas had two children (Saint-Thomas and Jane) by Jane. Both died in their infancy. Jane died on 23 Feb 1806.

Thomas Vernon married Elizabeth West in Southwark, St Saviours in 1809, both previously unmarried and of that Parish. But entry made in registers by the Chaplain.

Elizabeth West is from Mitcham.
Thomas and Elizabeth Vernon begin having children baptised in Mitcham from 1811 onwards.
Thomas dies in Mitcham in 1846 - his name on the death certificate and in the burial register is Saint Thomas Vernon.
His death is reported by Elizabeth.

In 1841 Census, he states he is not from the County of Surrey.

From Old Mitcham - Village Anecdotes by J.R.Chart ref RM681 & RM 682 bound together, Merton Local Studies Centre:
The fonts of the galleries [of Mitcham's new Parish Church] were carved in solid oak. The carving was done by Mr Vernon, my grandfather's head carpenter, and took twelve months. ... The carved work of the front of the galleries may be seen in a photograph I took in 1861 by the wet process (dry plates were only just coming in). ... When the church was finished, they had no organ, but used a string band. Mr Vernon, the head carpenter, was one of the violins of the orchestra, and a good player too.

The Churchwarden accounts for Mitcham, held at Surrey History Centre, Woking, (ref: P40/3/4, 1825-1870) show that on Dec 8, 1826 he was paid £3:18s for psalm books.

In 1832, the property owned by Daniel Garraway in which Thomas Vernon lived was passed to Garraway's granddaughter: (SHC K18/4/4)
I do will and bequeath to my Grand-daughter Charlotte Rebecca Garraway all that copyhold part freehold estate purchased from General Hibbert situate and being in the Upper Green in the parish of Mitcham in the County of Surrey to her and heirs for ever. This property of the Garraway family appears in the land tax records as follows:
1812 - 1815 rented to William Vernon £8 pa
1816 - 1820 rented to Vernon £7 pa
1821 - 1831 rented to Thomas Vernon £7 pa

The property was a house situated in a prime spot on Upper Green, rented for £7 per year. A decent place in those times, I presume.

Daniel Garraway leased a property in reigate in 1805 [and other years?] for £6 per year. Thomas Vernon is in the land tax record for Reigate in the same year.

There is no record of a William Vernon dying in Mitcham between 1815 and 1831. Perhaps I should check the neighbouring parishes?

The 1811 census for Mitcham shows a Vernon household with one family composed of one male and one female, employed as an artisan. This could refer Thomas, William, or even to Edward Vernon (advertising as Shoemaker in Holden's 1805 Directory). Note Thomas' first son (by Elizabeth West) was born in November 1811.

(Saint) Thomas Vernon does not appear to have left a will.

[NI024] Henry's occupations were listed as follows:
1832 - 1840 Pianoforte tuner in Mitcham (various Pigot's Directories, Mitcham, Surrey)
1841 Not in Pigots in Bexleyheath

[NI026] Occupation: Master Tailor

[NI027] Thomas does appear in the 1881 census (aged 62), so must have died later.

[NI045] Caroline does not appear in the 1881 census for Bexleyheath, therefore it is supposed that she died before then, but this has not been checked.

[NI471] It is only speculation that this Jane Jupp born in Lingfield is the Jane Jupp that married Saint-Thomas Vernon. However, in the IGI, there is only one other Jane Jupp born nearby (Limpsfield), who would have been still 16 at the time of her marriage - not too young to marry, but too young to swear the marriage licence!

Also, this Jane had a brother William, and there was also a William Jupp in Reigate in later years - but there again, half the male Jupps would have been called William, and there were quite a few in Limpsfield / Oxted and Lingfield....

[NF004] If my memory serves me rightly, Charles Frederick and Louisa were married by Revd William Hardy Vernon. Family lore has it that he was "no known relation".

[NF005] 19 Nov 1809 was a Sunday - Thomas and Elizabeth should have had a marriage licence to marry on a Sunday....?
Thomas was a Batchelor although he appears to have been married before to Jane Jupp.

[NF012] Details taken from the IGI it is not certain that this is the correct marriage

[NF015] Marriage entry in Carshalton register should be checked.
